Nokia 6020 review from New Zealand

"Great style, good phone, but why no Bluetooth?"

What things have gone wrong with the mobile phone?

I'm not a heavy cellphone user. A few months into owning the phone, I noticed that when I sometimes make a call to a land line or cellphone, I could hardly hear the person via the hands-free earpiece; same when the phone rings and is on auto answer. But not always.

Took the phone to the service agents, and under warranty they simply replaced the speaker and microphone on the phone, and all was fine.

General comments?

Love the style -- not kitchy-trendy, quite formal and almost Germanic, meaning it should still look decent a few years from now. Certainly doesn't look like a snotty teenager's cheap toy or a makeup case.

The keypad is well-sized. Though I don't have a large thumb, many phones these days have keypads so small it's difficult not to hit a wrong button.

The keys are quite tactile, which is something I really like. I thought I'd have problems with the joystick, but have found it easy enough to use.

Ease of use is OK I guess -- with all phones now packing enough features to send a rocket to the moon, you need to scroll through menus to get to what you want, though the Nokia 6020 allows for much customisation of the functions, which helps a lot.

There are many standard ring tones -- but only one "telephone" ring. I don't like fancy rings, I just want a phone that SOUNDS like a phone. My old 5110 had four "telephone" rings -- American, British, French, and German, this current phone only has a desk phone sound which doesn't have the exact pitch I'm after (to make it easier to hear in a noisy place).

The tone for text messages received is loud and cannot be turned down.

When you have a wallpaper (there are some really nice standard ones), you can't see the icons clearly. Nokia should've had a "frame" around the display with good contrast to tell you if you received a message or something. I simply turned the wallpaper off.

I keep hitting the PTT button, which I never use, with my thumb. There should be an option to permanently disable it rather than keep asking me if I want to turn it on.

I'm glad that my phone came with two different case/keypads. The displays were all white with silver buttons, which is why I didn't buy it at first. A batch came in with a silver case and black buttons, far smarter. Since they started it all, they should make other colour casings for it. I'd love to have a Ferrari red case with my black keypad.

My only complaint with the phone: NOKIA -- WHY DOES THIS 6020 HAVE A CAMERA AND NO BLUETOOTH, AND THE 6021 HAVE BLUETOOTH AND NO CAMERA??? Just for that I almost bought a Sharp, but the keypad was too small. I kept my old 5110 for 5 years until this phone came out. I wanted to get a phone with many features I MIGHT use within the next few years (I never sent SMS until a few years after I had the old phone). Now, cars and car stereos are coming up with Bluetooth hands-free connectivity. Yeah, I know there are other phones out there that have them both, but they mostly look like they'll be out of date in 7 months, and they look cheap and tacky for teenagers. If Nokia updates this phone with the same elegant looks, and with both camera and bluetooth, I'll get it.
