Very poor voice quality, that is, reception has is poor, sounds worse than the first ever old mobile phones.
The quality of the MP3 playback does not respond to the equaliser settings, no matter what you do.
The display light flickers as if there is poor electrical contact.
I have a 2GB memory card and yet cannot get the MP3 software to play more than 27 tracks. The rest will have to be played individually rather than simultaneously.
The phone does not cut off calls when you close the phone by sliding the face down (I've lost money this way).
The computer to phone software is not easy to install or use.
Has good battery life (that's because I don't use it).
Loud ring tones.
Has a USB to computer cable and software included with the package.
It's not true about poor sound quality and equalizer setting that doesn't respond.
About the 27 track problem; I think it's just a phone defect.
Also the PC software is easy to use, it only gave me a few problems when installing, that's all.
I own W850i and I can say it's one of the best cellphones ever made!!!
I agree with the comment about the poor sound quality of the Sony W850i. The person I am talking to hears my voice adequately, but their voice is muddled. Add this to the poor signal strength and you have a real mess.
I was wondering about this as all review sites I used to help me buy my phone simply "analyze" phone quality using their ear = muddled useless results. I found a source since then that actually does acoustic and signal strength measurements on all cell phones: www.connect.de
When you look at the charts (the top 15 chart of measurements is a free PDF at this site at http://www.connect.de/sixcms/media.php/10/0307_BL_Top.pdf)
I am appalled to see that very few phones have remotely adequate acoustic qualities, especially in the ability to hear the voice of the person you are talking to clearly. My old phones (Nokia 5100, Siemens SX1) were actually quite good as phones - the new crop of phones is poor.
(Notes about the charts: The actual measurements on the connect.de chart comparing send acoustic to receive acoustic are only visible in the connect magazine itself or by purchasing the data online. Most phones have adequate send acoustic, but poor receive acoustic. The sites free PDF shows only the total acoustic measure which may mask an unusable receive acoustic. Note also that connect.de weights the features higher than acoustic quality which means the phones that are in their top lists are their mainly for features rather than acoustic usability.)
If you see the data of all phones (not just those on the top 15 chart) then in summary:
- Virtually all Sony phones have very poor acoustic and poor signal strength; although they have good batteries (the one exception is the W550i which is good in all three)
- The previous generation of Nokia's (the "big brick" phones) generally had good acoustic, signal strength as bad as the Sony’s, and some had poor, some had average rather than good battery life. Some of the current generation, such as the N73 have just as poor results as the Sony’s, but now have better battery life, although a few newer models now also have good signal strength.
- The Samsungs vary greatly by model. Some, like the X700 and D600 have good measurements all around, most have excellent acoustic qualities, but there are also models that despite excellent acoustic have unusable signal strength and battery life. The variation is surprising as different models look similar, but have totally different qualities.
- The Motorola's of the current generation (Maxx v6, W220, W375) are generally excellent in all 3 areas. The previous generation of phones like the V3x and V3i had good acoustic qualities and signal strength, but poor battery life.
There are phones that have all 3 of acoustic, signal strength and battery life, but they are few and far between. Without measurement data however you'll be stuck in buying about a dozen phones before you find one that actually offers good telephone quality.
In short I am 31 yrs old and have had 15-20 phones in my lifetime. I rate this phone among the worst. Roll on my upgrade. A brick with no fun. A boring phone.
